1300 - Carib Indians of South America conquer the indigenous Arawak Indians
1498 - 1500 - Island is discovered in the third voyage of Christopher Columbus
1627 - Granted to Britain’s Lord CARLISLE
1660 - Declared neutral
1672 - Granted to Lord WILLOUGHBY
1675 - African slaves became the first permanent non-Carib settlers after swimming ashore from a Dutch shipwreck
1718 - La Soufriere volcano eruption
1719 - Yellow Caribs allow French settlement and slaves are brought in to work their estates
1722 - King George I grants the island to the Duke of Marlborough
1722 - 1748 French settle the island
1748 - Declared neutral again in the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle
1762 - Captured by British General Robert MONCKTON
1763 - Ceded to Great Britain
24 Sept. 1772 - Start of First Carib War, British forces led by Sir William YOUNG
17 Feb. 1773 - British sign treaty with Caribs giving them the Windward Coast of the island
1778 - French seize the island again
1780 - Hurricane destroys almost all the dwelling houses, the churches, and other buildings
1783 - Treaty of Versailles returns the island to the British
01 Jan. 1784 - France returns St. Vincent to the English following the Treaty of Versailles
1795 - 1797 - France supports Britain in deporting 5,000 Caribs to Roatan Island/Belize, after the Second Carib War
1812 - La Soufriere volcano erupts, many estates destroyed or damaged
1819 - Hurricane - heavy damage to outlying islands
1833 - Becomes part of the Windward Islands
1834 - Slavery is abolished - 18,000+ freed
1840 - Portuguese immigrant workers arrive
1898 - Widespread hurricane damage
1902 - La Soufriere volcano eruption kills 2,000 Vincentians
1935 - Labor Rebellion
1958 - 1962 - Part of the Federation of the West Indies
27 Oct. 1969 - Becomes an associated state
13 Apr. 1976 - La Soufriere erupts again
27 Oct. 1979 - Independence
