    I live in CANADA and I’m trying to research information on my grandfather who was born in St Vincent in the 1880’s 1890’s time period. His name was Henry Mclegon Dixon and he had one brother. His father was from Scotland. The two brothers left St. Vincent to work on the Panama Canal for the Americans. Henry eventually settled in Bermuda and his brother the USA.

    I have a gt-gt-grandfather called Adolphus James Hughes who was a doctor /surgeon on St Vincent in the Mid1800’s. He was the son of John James Hughes and Emily Hannah Susannah(nee Darrell), qualified at Kings in London and married Elizabeth Sarah Elwin. Their son Adolphus Ernest was born and baptised on St Vincent in 1867. Much of my research work has unfortunately been lost – many of the details I cannot remember

    Ragga007 on March 2nd 2008.

    Yes, Prime Mister of Trinidad & Tobago Dr. Eric Williams was related to one Mrs. La Board who used to teach me as a wee little girl.I think Maybe they were either first cousins or brother and sister, can’nt remember which. She was very friendly with my Grandmother Mrs. Teresa Ambrose, my mother’s mother, who my family grew up with. Very strict and proper she was, tiny lady with a strong voice even in her old age as I can recall. There are still some of her decendants back there. Mrs. La Board had two sons Earnest and can’nt remember the other name, he was married to a Barbadian lady. Hope this help you.

    Hi i’m looking for info on my family surname ABBOTT Can anyone help please

  21. Norval on September 26th, 2008 6:54 pm

    The Soleyn family is intertwined closely with other Vincentian families of Indian extraction (e.g., King, Mackenzie, Moore, Sutherland, Alexander, Ledger, Roberts, Bacchus) as well as the Chandlers (brother David and sister Margaret), who were apparently from Barbados, and a Beharry family (my paternal grandmother’s paternal grandmother) the branch of which I have not been able to track. Having done some family charting a while ago, I would love to revive that hobby.

    Parish records – They do exist

    There are sources:
    A source of St. Vincent Parish Records from 1765 to 1870 has been transcribed onto four volumes (and later filmed in 1987 onto microfilm).

    These volumes from Parish records of St. George parish, Church of England, St. Vincent, West Indies contain:-

    v. 1. Index of surnames – baptisms;
    baptisms, 1765-1826
    baptisms of slaves, 1826-1834
    baptisms, 1827-1837
    v. 2. Baptisms, 1837-1870
    v. 3. Index of surnames – marriages;
    marriages, 1765-1826
    marriages of slaves, 1825-1834
    marriages, 1827-1870
    v. 4. Index of surnames – burials;
    burials, 1765-1855.

    The problem:

    It is fortunate that this limited 105 years has been transcribed (thanks to Richard A. and Lillian J. Ross) and then later recorded onto microfilm (thanks to the Mormons) yet the problem for all Vincentian and our relatives across the world, as always, is poor access to Birth, Marriage and Death records of our ancestral families.

    Even to view this source will prove, for many, impossible. As of writing – there is currently no access to this single film on St. Vincent or in fact from any Caribbean island, across the wider world there are very few place of access also. I myself had to travel thousands of mile to England and visit what is now called the London Family History Centre to get to view the film (a very costly exercise).

    We desparately need our own ONLINE resource.

    Our own Family History Centre:

    With concerted effort – we ourselves could bring the records home an give ourselves access.

    We merely need to set up a Family History Centre of our own in St. Vincent – independent of the Registrar General Office or Department of Libraries Archives and Documentation Services. This will allow us to order a copy of the film and to begin to set up an independent online resource to access records of Births, Marriages and Deaths of our own families.

    Vincentians around the world:

    Our family is large and now covers the globe – Vincentians around the world, we now call upon you to volunteer. We urgently need to put in-place our own Family History Centre on mother-island St. Vincent. So start a sponsor group; go hassle companies owned by St. Vincents; have a garage sale or church fate and get the cash in:-

    acquisition of a home for our records – (for a new library of records and a place for visitors to research)
    air-conditioning and storeroom – (to protect films and books we acquire)
    film-reader machines – (so visitors can read the film(s) we acquire)
    film-scanner – (so visitors can print copies of records found)
    computers – (so we can start collecting transcription data and posting it online)
    contribute an online store (web-services) for data-entry and searches
    help develop online-access – (use the film-readers and scanner to transcribe the records)
    Vincentian members would join together in transcribing and adding family records

    “Re-claiming our St. Vincent family heritage”

    I am trying to find information on my mother’s side. My grand-mother was an only child, named Mary(or Maria)Alberta Da Silva, born in Edinboro, St Vincent, late 1800s or early 1900s. She died in April 1952. She had my mother, also an only child, named Florence Gellizeau, though the name on her birth certificate would have been Da Silva, also. I believe that my great grandmother’s name was Hazard, also from Edinboro. My mother still lives there. Any leads, anyone?
