The Royal St. Vincent Gazette:
This publication was likely started shortly after British rule began on St. Vincent in 1763. The newspaper was published until at least 1840 under similar titles. Some existing copies can be found in the British Library and in the holdings of the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica.
The St. Vincent Chronicle, and Public Gazette:
This publication was started in 1836, in the period between apprenticeship and emancipation. Its founders were members of the island’s coloured population, who sought to tell their side of the developing story. The newspaper’s editor was John Wilson ADAMS, who died in 1838. His death was noted in the Barbados newspaper as cited by The Colored American (October 20, 1838), a newspaper published in New York City: “The Barbadian newspaper of 8 September 1838 reported the death of Adams, who “distinguished himself by his long and zealous efforts to effect the emancipation of the negroes. Like Wilberforce*, he died just as his labors were crowned with success.” *William WILBERFORCE was born in 1759, the son of a wealthy English merchant. He became involved in social reform in the late 1700’s, and made his first speech against the slave trade before Parliament in 1789. Wilberforce died on 29 July 1833, only one month before Parliament passed the Slavery Abolition Act that gave all slaves in the British Empire their freedom. Some existing copies can be found in the British Library.
