early_printing_in_saint_vincent_book_cover For those of us with ancestral ties to St. Vincent, the publication of a new book about the island stirs some excitement. Many will rush to buy a copy with the hope that somewhere within the pages, one of our ancestors will be mentioned. Others will make the purchase to broaden their knowledge of St. Vincent history.

A new book published a few months ago just might do both for some of us.

Early Printing in Saint Vincent: The Island’s First Printers and Their Work, with a List of Saint Vincent Imprints, 1767 – 1834, was written by Gregory Frohnsdorff.

Its description from the publisher’s website states: "printing began in Kingstown as early as 1767, and it traces the island’s printing history through 1834, the year slavery was abolished in the British West Indies."

The details go on to mention several early printers, including William Smith, Joseph Berrow, James Adams, J. T. Calliard, John Drape, and Thomas LeGall. The book also contains details about them and some of their publications.

Also inside its pages, Frohnsdorff’s work includes an annotated list of more than 250 items printed in Saint Vincent prior to 1835.

Frohnsdorff is a catalogue librarian at the Charleston County Public Library in Charleston, South Carolina. He previously served on the faculty of The Citadel. His prior writings have focused on cataloguing issues and early West Indian libraries.
