KEANE
Keane Family Papers in the holdings of the Virginia Historical Society
The Virginia Historical Society’s Manuscripts Collection includes 79 items pertaining to three generations of the KEANE family of St. Vincent. Those records include the following KEANE family members:
Michael KEANE - (died 1796). Collection includes his letter books (1787 - 1794) concerning his work as Attorney-General of the island.
Hugh Perry KEANE - (1767 - 1821) Diaries for 1788 and 1789 - 1819. The collection states he was the son of Michael KEANE. See article on the life of Hugh Perry KEANE titled, “The Domestic World of a Vincentian Planter and his “Sable Venus” by Mark Quintanilla.
Susan KEANE - (born 1798) Diary for 1811 - 1869. Daughter of Hugh Perry KEANE.
Mariana (KEANE) PALMER - Diary for 1853 - 1857. Daughter of Hugh Perry KEANE.
Hugh Payne KEANE - (1807 - 1892) Son of Hugh Perry KEANE. Diaries for 1819 & 1820.
Collection states the KEANE’s were from Ireland who “participated in the colonization of the newly acquired colony of St. Vincent, British West Indies” between 1770 and 1810. “By the early nineteenth century (and after Michael KEANE’s death), the family purchased an English estate and effectively distanced themselves from their West Indian plantations, which they sold during the 1810s.” The diaries above have descriptions of the individuals lives on St. Vincent.
