John Wilson CARMICHAEL was born about 1775 (see death notice in Footnotes below), location unknown, but believed to be Scotland. By 1797, he was stationed with the 53rd Regiment of Foot in St. Vincent, where he married Margaret Ann FALSIDE (baptised in St. Vincent January 17, 1779, daughter of Dr. James FALSIDE and Anne ALEXANDER) [1] on August 24, 1797. [2]
Baptisms for two of their three known children are recorded in St. Vincent:
Stephen Falside CARMICHAEL, baptised Nov. 15, 1799. [3] (son of Lt. J. and Margaret, his wife, 53 Regiment)
Margaretta Jane CARMICHAEL, baptised May 23, 1807. [4] (daughter of J. and Margaret, his wife)
Isabella Anne CARMICHAEL was born about 1801, probably in St. Vincent, but her baptism is not recorded.
Between 1805 and 1814, the CARMICHAEL family seems to have left St. Vincent and moved to England. Margaret Ann (FALSIDE) CARMICHAEL died in London on August 03, 1774. [5] After the death of his first wife, John Wilson CARMICHAEL married a second time in Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland to Alison Charles STEWART, the daughter of Charles STEWART [6]. Any connections to the STEWART’s of St. Vincent isn’t known, but it should be noted that in her book, Mrs. CARMICHAEL says she “beheld the West Indies for the first time……on the last day of December, 1820.[7]
John Wilson CARMICHAEL and Alison Charles STEWART had at least two children, whose baptisms were recorded in Edinburgh, Scotland:
Mary Erskine CARMICHAEL christened at Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland on Jan. 1, 1817. [8]
Alison Johanna CARMICHAEL christened at Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland on May 4, 1819. [9]
According to Mrs. CARMICHAEL’s book, the family lived in St. Vincent a few years after 1820, before removing to Trinidad, where it appears they lived until 1832, which is the latest date found in the book. They left Trinidad for England, probably settling in Worcestershire. At some point thereafter, they removed to Jersey in the Channel Islands, settling in St. Helier, where John Wilson CARMICHAEL died in May 1850. [10]
Isabella Anne CARMICHAEL married Charles William WARNER on August 10, 1829 in Worcester, England. [11] She died in London, England in 1841. [12]
Margaretta Jane CARMICHAEL married Pemberton HOBSON on August 01, 1821 in St. Vincent.[13] She died on May 23, 1863 in Brighton, England. [14]
Mary Erskine CARMICHAEL appears not to have married. She was enumerated with her mother in the 1851, 1861, and 1881 Channel Island census in St. Helier, Jersey. She apparently died between 1871 and 1881, as her mother is enumerated with only one servant in the 1881 Channel Island census in St. Helier, Jersey.
Alison Johanna CARMICHAEL married Alexander John SUTHERLAND (son of Dr. Alexander Robert SUTHERLAND) on July 27, 1839 in St. Helier, Jersey. [15] It’s not yet known if he ties in with the SUTHERLAND family of St. Vincent.
