Daniel Stephen HAZELL & Ora “Brownie” DERRICK
Daniel Stephen HAZELL was born 13 November 1865 in Bequia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and died there, date unknown. He married before 1898 to Ora “Brownie” DERRICK. She died there in the 1940’s.
Their children were:

Simeon “Pappy” HAZELL (27 Sept. 1898 – 1988)
Simeon made at least one visit to the United States, arriving at Ellis Island in NY on 12 July 1922 disembarking from the ship Vauban. His port of departure was Barbados. He was still single at this point in time. He and his cousin, Egbert, were travelling together. He was going to stay with his cousin Edmund, living at 242 W. 144th St., New York. On the ship manifest, where Simeon was listed as passenger #13, they just wrote in ditto for Pappy for everything that Egbert said about his destination and his closest relative. It makes it seem as if John HAZELL was Sim’s father instead of Daniel and that Edmund was Pappy’s brother too instead of his cousin. It was probably easier to do it this way to avoid confusion or any threat of being detained or separated. Pappy stood 5′ 9″, complexion: black, hair: black, eyes: black according to the records of the customs agent. His occupation was a carpenter. Closest relative in country of birth was noted as father, John HAZELL, although John was really his uncle.
Among some of the other passengers who travelled on the same ship from Barbados were: Ashton CODRINGTON, Bernice SCOTT, Iris BROWNE, Fitzgerald GITTENS, Elton ALLEYNE, Randolphe WALKER, his wife Enid and their children Carita, George and baby Randolph.

Claudius “Claude” HAZELL (1894 – October 1989)
Uncle Claude moved to NJ in 1910 at the age of 16. He later moved to Fulton Street in Brooklyn, NY to be closer to his work on the ships/docks.
He left for Bequia at some undetermined point in time and then returned to the States, arriving back in NY on April 30, 1917 at the age of 23. Uncle Claude had sailed on the Saga which departed from Barbados. On this trip he had in his company Frances HAZELL, Owen Steadman WALLACE, Joseph OLLIVIERRE, and Cordelia DAVIS who were all from Bequia. Uncle Claude eventually married Anita HUTCHINSON of Bequia in the U.S.

Ormond HAZELL (1890 – ?)
Ormand was the oldest of Daniel HAZELL’s children. He traveled to the States in 1910 on the ship Tennyson with Timothy KIDD (KYDD). They were both staying at the residence of Timothy’s brother Alfred at 311 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey and they both gave as their occupation, sailors. He served in the U. S military in the 1914 war, got married and had a son by the name of John. Ormond returned back to Bequia and was involved in a drowning accident, his son later returned to the Caribbean and settled in Barbados for a few years and then went back to the U.S.
Height: 5′8″
Race: Colored
Occupation: Sailor
His name was spelled “Orman HAZALL” on the passenger list so it was tricky to find.
He was residing at 311 Smith Street, Perth Amboy, NJ in 1912 when his brother Henry and cousin Edmund came to visit. He was later living at 12 Rector Street in Perth Amboy, NJ in April 1917 when his brother Claude came to visit.
Somewhere between 1917 and 1920 Ormond moved from New Jersey to Philadelphia. (Wonder what prompted this move?) Ormond appears on the January 7, 1920 Philadelphia census, enumeration district 1191, 34th city ward. He was 28 years old. Occupation: carpenter. Married to Inez, 20 years old. Both listed as mulatto. They had no children in 1920. Their address was 112 Salford Street.
1920 Pennsylvania Census, Philadelphia County, Philadelphia – 34th Ward, ED#1191, Sheet 5B, Page 468-B, January 7, 1920
Dwelling #112 (Salford Street)
HAZELL, Ormond – head, male, Mulatto, age 28, married, citizenship status unknown, born West Indies, parents born West Indies, occupation: house carpenter
HAZELL, Inez – wife, female, Mulatto, age 20, married, citizenship status unknown, , born West Indies, parents born West Indies, no occupation
On the 1930 census Ormond is living with his cousin at 391 State Street in Perth Amboy. His line of information appears to have been added on the wrong page, since there is no indication as to who this cousin is or if there is other family living there. Only Ormond’s census info was taken for that dwelling. However, if you check the pages in order on Ancestry before and after his, it’s obvious things are out of order, and that he was living with Kensington HAZELL. Kensington is at the very bottom of the page he is on, and Ormond is at the very top of another page. Fortunately, both of their dwelling numbers under “place of abode” are an exact match. or this might never have been sorted out.
