DALZELL of St. Vincent

DALZELL Family

The DALZELL surname on St. Vincent has been found in several records. It is not yet known how any of the named individuals are related. First is John DALZELL, born in 1785 in Bermuda. His death notice was found in two old newspapers of Newfoundland, “The Newfoundlander” of Thursday, December 10, 1829 in the section for Avalon South Region - St. John’s District at St. John’s Newfoundland, and in the “Conception Bay Mercury Newspaper” (published at Harbour Grace) in its North Region section on the same date.
The obit reads as follows: Died, at St. Vincent, on the 11th of October last, aged 44 years, the HON. JOHN DALZELL, Colonel of Militia, Senior Assistant Justice, Speaker of the House of Assembly, an eminent merchant in that island.

Information from the LDS website’s IGI and Pedigree Resource File has further information on this John Dalzell. It states that he was the son of John DALZELL and Mary Seymour POULTON, and that he was born in Somerset, Sandy’s Parish, Bermuda in 1785. Additional information states his marriage date in St. Vincent as 1810, but his spouse is named only as “Mrs. John Dalzell”. It’s not known which of these John Dalzell’s is the one whose name is engraved on a silver snuff box with the names of members of a “Friendly Club” on St. Vincent which dates back to 1785.

Eliza Jane DALZELL, born about 1814 in St. Vincent, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John DALZELL (probably the John DALZELL on this page). Married 01 May 1834 to James A. LEAKE at St. Vincent.

Ann Augusta Eliza DALZELL was born 20 November 1820 and christened 28 February 1821 at St. George’s Anglican Cathedral in Kingstown, St. Vincent. Daughter of Samuel DALZELL and Mary MELVILLE.

Robert Dickson DALZELL, born about 1817 in St. Vincent. Married about 1840 in St. Vincent to Mrs. Robert Dickson DALZELL.

Mrs. Robert Dickson DALZELL, born about 1820 in St. Vincent. Married Robert Dickson DALZELL in St. Vincent about 1840.

Thalia Jane DALZELL, born about 1827 in St. Vincent to Robert DALZELL (born 1794 in Somerset, Sandy’s Parish, Bermuda, died 10 October 1829) and Mary Ann Bassett TUCKER (married 16 December 1819 in Somerset, Sandys Parish, Bermuda). Thalia Jane DALZELL married 20 February 1849 at Somerset, Sandy’s Parish, Bermuda to James CLERK. Note: In Thalia Jane DALZELL’s christening record at St. George’s Anglican Cathedral in Kingstown, St. Vincent her full name is given as Thalia Jane Tucker DALZELL. Her birth date is given as 02 September 1820, and her christening date is 25 March 1821. Her father is listed as Robert DALZELL, Esquire and her mother is given as Mary Ann BASSETT, his wife.

Dr. William Tucker Dickinson DALZELL. Born 07 June 1827 at St. Vincent. Parents not named. Married 31 October 1865 in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA to Felicite Estelle LOGAN. He died 08 February 1899, location not given.

Betsy DALZELL, christening at Calliaqua recorded 10 May 1828 in records of  St. George’s Anglican Cathedral in Kingstown, St. Vincent. Daughter of Charles DALZELL and Polly ALEXANDER.

Male child unnamed, DALZELL born about 1841 in St. Vincent to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dickson DALZELL.

James Charles French DALZELL, born about 1843 in St. Vincent. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dickson DALZELL.

Note: Additional information can be found on the webpage “Descendants of Ephraim GILBERT” regarding another child of the older John DALZELL above. It states that “Olivia Augusta DALZELL was born in 1807, daughter of John DALZELLand Mary POULTON. She was married 19 April 1827 at Sandy’s, Bermuda to John Alexander Moore GILBERT. She died 18 January 1835 in “Friendship”, Mangrove Bay, Somerset, Sandy’s, Bermuda.”
Island of St. Vincent Militia

In 1821 for the Southern Regiment Captain John DALZELL is listed as deceased, and in the Northern Regiment list for 1821 Captain Robert DALZELL is listed as a deceased officer.

In 1828, in a list of a Troop of Light Cavalry, Colonel Sir Charles BRISBANE and Captain Robert DALZELL are starred as deceased officers.

The Southern Regiment list for that year shows Colonel John DALZELL is starred as a deceased officer.

The “devisees of George DALSELL/DALZELL” are named in an 1829 Proprietors of Estates list as being associated with the Rosebank estate, a 250 acre property.
