Hello Corwin, Sorry for not answering sooner but I have not been checking this website for emails as I have an address at the top of my links page for this purpose however, very good you have been to Portugal and have made some way in your research. Madeira is where I go mostly every year as I have not been sucessful so far in the Paternal side of my family mainly there is virtually no info. in St. Vincent before 1864 for births & deaths. Deaths can be of some help in that the age of death can give some indication of the year of birth, give or take a year or two as dates sometimes were not correct.
I have not come across your family name. but cannot understand the lack of infomation because your family names were well known. Do you know Dentist Ellis’s parents name? Another point you need to bear in mind is where a mother’s name on a death cert. can be her maiden name or if she is known by a nick name this may be registered in death rather than the true name.
A good starting point is going through the Indexes starting from 1864 for births and working foward writing down all the info you find of all the Ellis’s births, the same for the marriages, the church also would have info. and the same for the deaths, this is the only way when you do not have dates to start from. Having another person with you can speed this up. This is very time consuming and be monotenous but there is no short cut to this.
As far as Dr. Ellis is concern I remember him from my school days and I am guessing but I would estimate he was born around 1910 give or take five years.

Hi Cheryl, I like what you are doing to preserve our ancestry in St Vincent. Have you come across any info on the Fraser’s or Ellis families. Dentist Ellis of Kingstown was my paternal great uncle, his people came from Portugal originally via Funchal in Madeira. I am trying to find birth, marriage and death info for these ancestors of mine and as you know our people were not meticulous at keeping such records. I go to Portugal three times a year to try and trace the Ellis (Ellias, the original family name) family, which I have a little success with over there but I go home to SVG regularly and I can’t seem to get any info on the families there. I guess I don’t know where to look. Can you help? There is nothing on the Fraser’s in Georgetown, Layou, Kingstown, Cane Garden, Carapan or Stubbs where I understand most lived. I also knew my great uncle Harry had worked at the Barnards in Orange Hill around the fifties.

Hi Holly,

I’m afraid that the name Harrington doesn’t ring any bells.

However, I did have a look at the Sugar Refiners & Sugar Bakers database (http://home.clara.net/mawer/sugarhha.html) and came across:

HARRINGTON Sarah – (age 33) Tate’s (35 Parker St) Silvertown 1901 1901 census RG13/ 1578/ 41

I don’t know if she might have any connection to your Harringtons. One of my St Vincent MacDonalds went to work for Tates, at Silvertown, at about the same time.

I also think that I saw the name Wiseman amongst the regimental histories displayed at Gun Hill, Barbados.

Oh my gosh mike, if you come across any information of my grandfather Carl Herman Hamilton Harrington formerly of Scotland, then to England then settled in St. Vincent, also a wealthy estate owner, and was also one of the founding fathers of the original bus service on the island along with someone named Mr. Harry, I would like for you to inbox me a message.

Did you know that all of the wealthy estate owners of the island were all from Scotland, then some moved to T&T.

Hello,

I just spoke to my mother discussing the family ancestry. She was telling me of how her father Carl Harrington, a wealthy Vincentian was one of the first individuals along with a gentleman named Mr. Harry started the first bus service on Saint Vincent, before marrying my grandmother Adina James, and moving to Trinidad. Carl Harrington was born in Scotland, his family then moved to England, and as a young man he came to the island of Saint Vincent, where other relatives were residing and settled there. He and Mr. Harry were the original founding fathers of the Saint Vincent Bus Service. With my mother’s memories of her father, she wants me to get a few books written and published for her, which I will be doing very soon.

Hi Cheryl,
I came across the name Phillips and noticed her was an estate owner. It is possible that this guy was my great-great grandfather. He had several children with several women – a common occurrence with estate owners. He lived in the Layou area and probably visited other towns.
He has my grandmother Elspeth and Martha (who went to T&T some time after the 1902 eruption in SVG.

I was talking to relatives of the Rakal (Fraser) family in Layou a few days ago, before I came back to Toronto. The Layou Rakal was married to Jane. She was from Vermount. They had about 12 children. Only one is still alive in a nursing home in NYC. The grand-children still live in Layou. Rakal went to Layou after the 1902 eruption with the Fraser – estate owners from whom they get the Fraser name.

Looking for information on Latham from Mespotamia. He would have been my grandfather on my father’s side. He has two sons and a daughter that I know of. One son Levi ‘Sonny’ Latham is my biological father. He also has a sister named Cynthia. Grandfather Latham was involved in politics in Mesopotamia. Any information would be helpful.

What I have found since my original comment about the Dalzells:
Sarah’s father was John Wickham Mayer, d. 1808 in Antigua. Her Mother was Esther Wickham. Sarah had at least one sister, Ann, d. 1796, who married a Charles Grant, d 1821.
