ST. GEORGE’S ANGLICAN CATHEDRAL MEMORIALS

This list is a small portion of many memorials to be found inside of the St. George’s Anglican Cathedral in Kingstown, St. Vincent, as well as some of the headstones located in the adjacent graveyard.

Some of the extracts on this page were transcribed by researcher CINDY KILGORE, who has graciously allowed us to use them here.

AUDAIN, Hon. John - Member of Her Majesty’s Council in this Island. Died in London 13th May 1864, aged 56 years. Interred at Kensel Green Cemetery.

ALEXANDER, John - died 1806 - of the 32nd Regiment and Proprietor.

ANTROBUS, Sir Charles James - died June 3, 2002 - 14th May 1933 - 3rd June 2002. Fourth Governor General of St. Vincent and the Grenadines 31st May 1996 - 3rd June 2002

BERKELEY, Alfred Pakenham - Bishop of Barbados and the Windward Islands, 1917 to 1927. First Bishop of the Windward Islands 1927 to 1930. Also his wife, Emily Berkeley BERKELEY.

BRISBANE, Sir Charles - died November 1829 - To the Memory of Sir Charles BRISBANE, Rear Admiral of the Red Knight Commander of the Most Honorable Military Order of the Bath. Governor, Captain General and Vice Admiral of the Islands of St. Vincent and its dependencies. He was the 4th son of Admiral Brisbane, descended from an ancient family long resident at Brisbane, In the County of Ayr, In North Britain born in the Year 1772, died in November 1829, having early entered into the Royal Navy, he distinguished himself in various actions, and in the year 1807, achieved the memorable capture of the island of
Curacoa; as a reward for this distinguished conduct, he was Appointed Governor of this Colony, which he retained
for a period of Upwards of 20 years. The Inhabitants of this Island, being desirous of recording their Gratitude for His Services, have caused this Monument to be erected in his Memory.

BROWN, James William - died Feb. 02, 1847 - For many years a Member of Council of this Island. Died in London on 2nd February 1847, aged 54 years. Buried at Kensal Green Cemetery. Tablet erected by his widow.

BROWN, Robert, Esquire - died Oct. 20, 1830 - Native of Spring Town, Ireland. Member of the House of Assembly. Died October 20th, 1830, aged 68 years. Tribute erected by his daughter.

CAMPBELL, Sir John - died Jan. 18, 1853 - His death notice in the Gentleman’s Magazine states that he died January 18th, 1853 at the home of Hon. John LeGALL in Kingstown, at age 44. He was the seventh Baronet of Ardnarmurchan [co. Argyll, Scotland], appointed St. Vincent Lt. Gov. in 1845.

CHAMPION, Major John Carey - died Oct. 13, 1824 - Of His Majesty’s 21st Regiment, Royal Scots Fuzileers [Fusiliers]. Assassinated October 13th, 1824, aged 37.

CHECKLEY, Revd. John - died Jan. 6, 1852 - Born March 31st, 1780 in the County Cork, Ireland. Bachelor of Arts of Trinity College, Dublin. Rural dean of St. Vincents and for twenty years, Rector of these Parishes, who died 6th of January 1852 (?). This tablet…..erected by The Church of England Friendly Society which he formed 1840 (?) and over which he presided as Director until his death. Presidents: __ ARRINDELL, H. McDOWAL (?), Vice Presidents: J. G. BLYDEN, P. DeGILLY (?).

DALZELL, John - died Oct. 11, 1829 - Speaker of the House of Assembly. Died October 11th, 1829, aged 47 years.

DASENT, Charlotte - died Jan. 10, 1824 - Infant daughter of John Roche DASENT and Charlotte Martha DASENT. Died January 10th, 1824. Aged one year and 18 days.

DASENT, George Webbe, D. C. L. - died June 11, 1896 - Sometime one of His Majesty’s Civil Service Commissioners. Third son of John Roche DASENT of the Union estate. Born in St. Vincent, May 22, 1817. Died in England at his home Tower Hill in the County of Berks, June 11, 1896.

DASENT, Harriet Frances (IRWIN) - died Jan. 22, 1808 - Wife of John Roche DASENT, Esq., His Majesty’s Attorney General of this island. Eldest daughter of Alexander Burrowes IRWIN and Lydia IRWIN. Died January 22, 1808, aged 23 years. Buried near the remains of her father.

DASENT, John Roche -died Feb. 15, 1832 - President of the Council and His Majesty’s Attorney General for this Island, during a space of 26 years. He was seized with a stroke of Apoplexy, which after hours of suspense, terminated fatally on February 15th, 1832, and in the 56th year of his age.

DASENT, Sir John Roche, C. B. - died Nov. 22, 1914 - Of Montrose House in this Island, sometime as Assistant Secretary of the Board of Education. Eldest son of George Webbe DASENT, born in the city of London, January 24, 1847. Died 22nd November 1914.

FRENCH, James Charles - died Feb. 14, 1832 - For many years Member of His Majesty’s Council. Died February 14th, 1832. Aged 39 years and 7 months. Left wife and 5 children.

GUILDING, Revd. John, M. A., M. G. S. - died July 25, 1818 - For more than 20 years Rector of the Parishes of St. George, and St. Andrew, in this Island. Died on July 25th, 1818. Tablet erected by his son Revd. Lansdown GUILDING, B. A. & Rector.

GUILDING, Mary (HUNT) - died Nov. 15, 1827 - Tablet of Revd. John GUILDING, also honors his son’s wife, Mary (HUNT) GUILDING, daughter of Revd. S. HUNT, M. A., Rector of Wakerly and St. Georges Stamford. She died in childbed on November 15th, 1827, leaving five little children.

HACKSHAW, Hon. Harry - died March 1, 1843 - Died March 1st, 1843, aged 67 years.

HAZELL, Henry Arrindell - died Nov. 28, 1900 - Died at his residence Sion Lodge, November 28th, 1900. Aged 59 years.

HAZELL, Elizabeth - died 1869 - Memorium to all three placed at the Anglican Church in Bequia - In Memoriam Hercules HAZELL who died in September 1833 at the age of 84 years, and Elizabeth, his wife, were among the early settlers in this island. Their son, Hercules HAZELL died in September 1848 aged 63 years, and with his parents is buried in this Churchyard. Elizabeth, his wife, died in August 1869, aged 83 years and is buried in St. Georges Churchyard, Kingstown. This tablet is erected to their memory by John H. HAZELL in 1876.

HAZELL, Jane Ann - died Dec. 18, 1889 - Wife of John H. HAZELL. Died at her residence “Windsor” December 18th 1889, aged 69. Buried in the family enclosure of this cathedral.

HAZELL, John Hercules - died Nov. 22, 1886 - Died at the Island of Mustique on November 22nd, 1886, aged 70. Buried in the family enclosure of this cathedral. Another memorium to him was placed at the Anglican Church in Bequia - In Loving Memory of John Hercules HAZELL who died at the Island of Mustique. 22nd November 1886, and was buried at St. Georges Cathedral, Kingstown, aged 70.

HOBSON, Hon. John Henry - died Nov. 10, 1829 - Chief Justice of this Island, followed the law profession for many years. Died November 10th, 1829, aged 53 years.

HUNT, Mary Lloyd (PRICE) - died Nov. 2, 1849 - Wife of William HUNT, Esq., daughter of the late Thomas PRICE, Esq., of Llanidloes, North Wales. Died at the Villa Estate, November 2nd, 1849. Aged 33 years.

IRWIN, Alexander Burrowes - died July 22, 1806 - Descended from an ancient and honorable family in Ireland. Served in the 32nd Regiment of Infantry, afterwards a proprietor in this island, where he resided many years. Died July 22, 1806, aged 63 years. Buried near the North Western boundary wall of this church yard.

IRWIN, Henry Bury - died Nov. 10, 1813 - Captain in His Majesty’s 68th Regiment of Foot. Only son of Alexander Burrowes IRWIN and Lydia IRWIN. Died at the Battle of the Pyrenees on the frontiers of Spain on November 10th, 1813. Aged 26 years.

JACKSON, Vibert (D. D.) - died 1963 - Right Reverend, Bishop of the Windward Islands, 1930 - 1936. Died 1963. Also his wife Dorothy JACKSON.

KIRBY, Francis Alven - died July 1, 1841 - Third son of Charles KIRBY, Esq., of the Retreat. Died at St. Vincent’s after only a week’s illness July 1st, 1841. Aged 16 years.

KIRBY, Henrietta Louisa - died Sept. 12, 1833 - Daughter of Charles KIRBY, Esq., of the Retreat. Died September 12th, 1833, aged 12, 13, or 15 (?) at Cane End House, Oxfordshire.

KIRBY, Henry - died Oct. 12. 1833 - Eldest son of Charles KIRBY, Esq., of the Retreat. Died October 12th, 1833. Aged 21 years. Buried at Camberwell, Surrey.

KIRBY, Octavia - died Sept. 16, 1834 - Second daughter of Charles KIRBY, Esq., of the Retreat. Died at St. Vincent’s September 16th, 1834. Aged 14 years.

LaBORDE, Archdeacon [Horatio William] - died Oct. 10, 1891 - Horatio William LaBORDE, Archdeacon, M. A,, died October 10, 1891, aged 70 years.

LaBORDE, Elizabeth - died Dec. 30, 1850 - Wife of William LaBORDE, died at Union Hall in Trinidad, December 30th, 1850.

LaBORDE, Wiliam [James] - died Jan. 11, 1843 (?) - Senior Member of His Majesty’s Legislative Council and President administering the Government….faithfully served his countty for many years. Died January 11th (?), 1843 (?), in the 63rd (?) year of his age.

LEITH, Major [Alexander] -died Aft. 1795 - Major [Alexander] LEITH was the British Army Officer who was challenged to a duel by Carib Chief Chatoyer, who was killed in the contest.

LEWIS, Rosa Jane - died March 23, 1858 - Youngest daughter of the late Lewis LEWIS, Esq., of Tynyllwyn, in the County of Radnor, South Wales. She died March 23rd, 1858 (?), aged 24 years. [On tablet with John WHITTALL, Esq.]

LEYBORNE, William Leyborne - died 1825 - Sacred of the Memory of His Late Excellency William Leyborne Leyborne
Captain General Governor and Commander of Chief In and Over His Majesty’s Southern Caribbee Islands, Grenada, St. Vincent, Tobago, and the Grenadines. Chancellor Ordinary and Vice Admiral of the Same. Who died April XVIMDCCLXXV Aged XXXIX (monument is a 10-12 feet tall concrete urn with a concrete wall around it).

MacDOWALL, Daniel - died 1829 - Colonel of Southern Regiment of St. Vincent

MELVILLE, Margaret Jane - died 10 May 1829 - “A tribute to the memory of Margaret Jane Melville, wife of Alexander Melville, M. D. and daughter of Herbert Palmer COX and Jane his wife who died on 10th May 1829, aged 54 years, she was zealous in the performance of her religious duties strictly virtuous and dutiful to her husband, an affectionate wife and tender mother to her children firmly attached to her relatives and friends, a most indulgent mistress to her servants, compassionate to all in sickness and distress, benevolent to those she found poor and needy, to no one an enemy, to everyone a friend.” C. G.- M. B. - T. M. (initials of three of her children who posted the memorial to her.)

MORRIN, Janet - died Sept. 12, 1836 - Only child of John L. MORRIN, Esq. and Mary, his wife, who after a short residence in this Island of nine months and ten days, departed this life 12th September 1836, in the 18th year of her age.

PATTEN, Henry Alexander - died 21 July 1844 - Henry Alexander PATTEN was buried 21 July 1844 in the St. George’s Anglican Cathdedral churchyard in Kingstown, St. Vincent. Information from PATTEN descendent:Di COGHLAN dialincc@tpg.com.au

PAUL, Hon. Robert - died 13 September 1823 - President of His Majesty’s Council In this Island; in which situation his best endeavours were constantly exerted in forwarding the Interests of the Colony; died 13th September 1823, aged 77 years.

PLUMMERIDGE, Charles William - died Oct. 26, 1850, aged 20 years.

PLUMMERIDGE, John Jasper - died April 5, 1883 - Husband of Leonora Margarett PLUMMERIDGE. Born July 4th 1828. Died April 5th, 1883. For many years a prominent merchant and sometime member of the House of Assembly in this Island.

SNELL, James Dr. - died July 6, 1850 - Died at Peter’s Hope in this Island, July 6th, 1850, aged 50 years.

STEWART, Charles Douglas (Esq.) - died Nov. 19, 1864 (?) - Barrister at Law who died in this Island on the 19th of November 1864 (?). Aged 60 years.

STRUTH, Nathaniel -died 1847 - Justice of the Peace

TONKS, Horace Norman Vincent - died 1959 - Right Reverend, Bishop of the Windward Islands, 1937 - 1947. Died 1959.

WHITTALL, John (Esq.) - died April 9th, 1858 (?) - Of Camden Park in this Island and late of Pontywall Hall in the County of Brecon, South Wales. Died after a short illness on April 9th, 1858 (?), aged 45 years.

    searching for ANTHONY HART HOBSON died sometime before 1878 and any other Hobsons that show up.
